Description
Tomigaoka Hachiman Shrine at Fukagawa, from Utagawa Hiroshige's series Famous Places in Edo (Koto meisho), depicts one of the major Hachiman shrines on the east bank of the Sumida River. Tomigaoka Hachiman in Fukagawa, founded in the seventeenth century, was a religious and recreational anchor for the densely settled neighborhoods east of the river. Hiroshige's landscape print arranges the shrine compound -- great torii, tile-roofed halls, lanterns, and pine trees -- against the open sky, with worshippers and seasonal visitors moving through the precincts toward the main hall. As Edo ukiyo-e from one of the artist's many famous-places sets, the sheet exemplifies the way he documented the religious geography of the shogun's capital: every district had its tutelary shrine, every shrine its calendar of festivals, and Hiroshige's prints together compose a quietly comprehensive guidebook to that geography. The composition uses the soft gradations of color and the clean architectural drawing that mark the artist's mature manner, and the figures keep the image at a human scale rather than a monumental one. The Harvard Art Museums impression links Tomigaoka Hachiman to the broader Koto meisho project, and underlines Hiroshige's role as the great urban landscape print artist of late Edo, attentive to civic, sacred, and seasonal layers of his city.
