住吉本社(浪花百景)
This color woodblock print by Utagawa Kunikazu, dated 1860-1861 and preserved by the Osaka Municipal Central Library through Wikimedia Commons, depicts the main shrine (本社) of Sumiyoshi-taisha (住吉大社), one of the oldest and most historically significant Shinto shrines in Japan and the principal religious anchor of southern Osaka, as documented in the Naniwa hyakkei (One Hundred Views of Naniwa, 浪花百景) series. Sumiyoshi-taisha, founded according to tradition in the third century and reconstructed over centuries in the distinctive sumiyoshi-zukuri architectural style characterized by straight gabled roofs and the absence of intermediate columns at the entrances, served as the protector shrine of seafarers, poets, and the broader regional community. The composition shows the main shrine complex with its straight-line architectural emphasis, the arched taiko-bashi (drum bridge) for which Sumiyoshi is renowned, surrounding shrine grove, and pilgrim activity that gave the print its civic and devotional context. The Naniwa hyakkei series, comprising approximately 102 prints designed collaboratively by Kunikazu together with Hasegawa Sadanobu II and Nansuitei Yoshiyuki in 1860-1861, surveys Osaka temples, bridges, shrines, theater districts, and merchant landmarks across the chū-[tanzaku](/glossary/tanzaku) format. Sumiyoshi-taisha's inclusion as a major subject reflects the shrine's centrality to Osaka identity and its standing as a pilgrimage destination that drew visitors from across the Kansai region. The print is executed in ink and color on paper with the restrained palette and careful architectural drawing characteristic of mature kamigata-e [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e).
