宗禅寺場々(浪花百景)
This color woodblock print by Utagawa Kunikazu, dated 1860-1861 and preserved by the Osaka Municipal Central Library through Wikimedia Commons, depicts the riding ground (場々, baba) of Sōzen-ji Temple (宗禅寺) in Osaka, one of the lesser-known temple subjects documented in the Naniwa hyakkei (One Hundred Views of Naniwa, 浪花百景) series. The composition shows the open riding ground used by samurai and townsmen for equestrian training and ceremonial display, with the temple structure providing the architectural anchor and surrounding pines establishing the atmospheric setting. The selection of a temple riding ground rather than a major main-hall view for inclusion in the series reflects the Naniwa hyakkei project's attention to specifically Osaka subjects that documented urban culture beyond the strictly religious or topographical landmarks emphasized in Hiroshige's Edo meisho tradition. The Naniwa hyakkei series, comprising approximately 102 prints designed collaboratively by Kunikazu together with Hasegawa Sadanobu II and Nansuitei Yoshiyuki, surveys Osaka temples, bridges, shrines, theater districts, and merchant landmarks in the chū-[tanzaku](/glossary/tanzaku) format. The print is executed in ink and color on paper with the restrained palette and atmospheric gradient sky characteristic of Osaka kamigata-e [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e). The Osaka Municipal Central Library preserves the most complete extant set of the Naniwa hyakkei series, and digital reproductions on Wikimedia Commons have made the series accessible to international research. Sōzen-ji's inclusion in the series testifies to the comprehensive documentary mission of the Naniwa hyakkei project, which sought to record Osaka civic landscape across both major and minor sites at a moment of cultural transition.
