玉江橋景(浪花百景)
This color woodblock print by Utagawa Kunikazu, dated 1860-1861 and preserved by the Osaka Municipal Central Library through Wikimedia Commons, depicts the Tamae-bashi Bridge (玉江橋), one of the major span bridges over the Dōjima River in central Osaka, as documented in the Naniwa hyakkei (One Hundred Views of Naniwa, 浪花百景) series. The composition shows the bridge in characteristic kamigata-e perspective with foot traffic crossing the span, boats moored or passing beneath, and the surrounding riverside merchant buildings rendered in the atmospheric palette typical of the series. Osaka's bridges, immortalized in the city's traditional designation as Naniwa no yatsuhashi (the Eight Bridges of Naniwa), were central to its identity as a commercial and transit hub, and the Naniwa hyakkei devoted substantial attention to documenting them as both topographical landmarks and social spaces. The Tamae-bashi connected the Dōjima rice market district with the southern bank of the river and served as a daily transit route for merchants, porters, and theatergoers. The Naniwa hyakkei series, comprising approximately 102 prints designed collaboratively by Kunikazu together with Hasegawa Sadanobu II and Nansuitei Yoshiyuki, was the great Osaka topographical project that paralleled Hiroshige's Edo meisho tradition. The print measures the chū-[tanzaku](/glossary/tanzaku) format used throughout the series and is executed in ink and color on paper with the restrained palette, gradient sky, and selective use of indigo for the river that exemplify Osaka kamigata-e [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) production. The Osaka Municipal Central Library preserves the most complete extant set of the series.
