Designed by Utagawa Kunisada, now signing as Toyokuni III, in 1847, this Art Institute of Chicago portrait shows Sawamura Sojuro V in the formidable female role of Tsubone Iwafuji, the scheming senior court lady of the Kagamiyama plays. Iwafuji is one of the great onnagata roles of the late Edo period, demanding both icy hauteur and the controlled physicality of confrontation scenes, and Kunisada draws Sojuro V with the lifted brows and pursed mouth that signaled the role to fans before they had even read the cartouche. By the late 1840s Kunisada had been Toyokuni III for three years and was simultaneously the dominant yakusha-e designer and the head of the Utagawa school's vast network, supplying Edo's publishers with hundreds of designs a year. The kimono pattern, brocade obi, and patterned headdress in this print are rendered with the kind of dense, deliberately maximalist surface that defined late Edo ukiyo-e fashion plates. Within the post-Tempo regulatory landscape, sheets of this kind balanced the new restrictions on explicit actor naming with the audience's demand for unmistakable star portraits, and Kunisada's solution, exact nigao likeness over a role-titled cartouche, became standard. The Art Institute's holdings preserve the impression with its publisher data intact, situating it within the artist's late-career maturity as Toyokuni III.
