Description

Boatmen work their craft at sunset near the sacred island of Miyajima, the fading light turning the water copper and the figures into silhouettes against the luminous sky in this evening scene by Yuhan Ito. The working boatmen of Miyajima's sheltered waters appeared regularly in landscape prints of the period, their daily labor lending a human scale and temporal grounding to a landscape otherwise dominated by the timeless drama of the great torii and the island's ancient forest. Ito captures the transition between the working day and the quiet of evening.
