Description
Silhouettes of sailing vessels crowd a harbor at sunset, the water turning gold and copper as the sky burns above the masts and hulls in this shipping scene by Yuhan Ito. Harbor scenes at dusk were a recurring subject in shin-hanga printmaking, combining the romance of traditional wooden sailing vessels with the dramatic visual possibilities of reflected sunset light. Ito uses the strong horizontal of the waterline to anchor the composition while the rigging and masts create a web of vertical and diagonal lines against the glowing sky.
