by Yuko Kimura
The eighth work in Kimura's Night Shimmer series, this print explores light behavior in low-visibility conditions through layered paper collage on washi and etched tonal marks. Collaged washi sheets of varying fiber density and surface treatment create zones of differential opacity and reflection, producing shimmer-like visual effects without representational imagery. Etched lines or aquatint fields may suggest the fragmented luminosity of reflected light—on water, glass, or wet pavement—without specifying a source. As a serial work, Night Shimmer No. 8 implies an iterative investigation in which each print refines the compositional and material variables governing the perception of light. The washi ground itself, with its natural fiber inclusions and absorbent surface, contributes to the softened, diffuse quality of the light effects.
