河南八勝 第三 釣魚
by Sakai Bunsei
Fishing from a Secluded Cove is the third sheet of Bunsei's series Henan Hasshō (河南八勝, Eight Excellent Views of Henan), published c. 1830s and known in the Harvard Art Museums complete set. The composition centers on a rocky islet thickly covered with deciduous trees whose canopies are stamped in the dotted, bunched ink convention of Chinese Southern School (Nanga) landscape painting; among the trees a small shrine or pavilion with a yellow tiled roof is half-visible, approached by a stone path. At the right two tiny fisherman figures stand on the rocks of the further shore, one casting a line into a body of saturated blue water that runs along the lower edge of the sheet. The yellow background sky above the islet carries the printed series designation 河南八勝 第三 (Henan Eight Views, no. 3) at left, two red seal-form cartouches reading 釣魚 ("fishing"), and a four-line Chinese-style poem in regular script. Bunsei's signature seal 文清/文星 (Bunsei) is impressed beneath the trees at left center. The print exemplifies Bunsei's adaptation of the Bunjinga landscape sensibility of his teacher Tani Bunchō to the printed medium: a single closely observed natural motif framed by generous negative space and tied to a literary inscription, in a small horizontal format that pitches the work between the album leaf and the commercial nishiki-e.
