河南八勝 第六
by Sakai Bunsei
Thatched Pavilion Among Pines Above the Shore is the sixth sheet of Bunsei's series Henan Hasshō (河南八勝, Eight Excellent Views of Henan), c. 1830s, preserved in the complete Harvard Art Museums set. The composition is dominated by a stand of tall pines and small flowering trees on a low rocky promontory at the right, sheltering a thatched-roof scholar's pavilion with white walls and a small subsidiary structure behind it; a flight of cut stone steps climbs from the foreground toward the pavilion. The left half of the sheet opens to a body of saturated teal-blue water and a yellow sky above, against which a Chinese-style poem in regular script is printed alongside two red seal-form caption cartouches and the printed series designation 河南八勝 第六 (Henan Eight Views, no. 6). Bunsei's seal-form signature 文清/文星 (Bunsei) is impressed at the right edge of the picture. The print exemplifies the Bunjinga (literati) ideal of the scholar's retreat — a small habitable pavilion set in an evocative natural landscape, accompanied by inscribed verse — that Bunsei translated from his teacher Tani Bunchō's painting practice into the printed medium. The compactness of the format and the steeply rising terrain compress the conventional retreat motif into a single intimate sheet suitable for an album.
