河南八勝 第七 伊瀬皎月
by Sakai Bunsei
Moon over the Yi River is the seventh sheet of Bunsei's series Henan Hasshō (河南八勝, Eight Excellent Views of Henan), c. 1830s, preserved in the Harvard Art Museums complete set. The composition is a moonlit night view: a body of saturated blue water flows diagonally from lower left to mid-right, framed by a tall cliff face in pale gray ink at the upper left and a low rocky promontory with pines and a small open pavilion at the right. The composition's atmospheric effect, characteristic of the Eight Views landscape tradition's interest in moments of weather and time, is achieved through the contrast of cool blue water against gray cliff and the careful placement of small architectural and figural elements. The upper register carries the printed series designation 河南八勝 第七 (Henan Eight Views, no. 7), the printed caption title 妓瀬皎月 ("Moon over the Yi River" or related rapids), two red seal-form caption cartouches, and a Chinese-style poem in regular script. Bunsei's seal-form signature 文清/文星 (Bunsei) is impressed at the lower left edge. The sheet places Bunsei's series in dialogue with the canonical Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang Rivers (which traditionally include an Autumn Moon over Lake Dongting and a Night Rain over Xiao and Xiang scene); Bunsei substitutes a moonlit Chinese landscape with a topographical name from Henan, providing a printed equivalent to the moonlight album leaves of the painted Bunjinga tradition.
