河南八勝 第八 石門喬松
by Sakai Bunsei
Pines and Rocks of Shimen is the eighth and final sheet of Bunsei's series Henan Hasshō (河南八勝, Eight Excellent Views of Henan), c. 1830s, preserved in the Harvard Art Museums complete set. The composition is built around a body of saturated blue water in the foreground from which three vertical rock outcrops with pines rise at the center and right, framed by a wide gray cliff at the left and a low distant mountain range at the upper right. The vertical rocks resemble the famous Shimen (石門, "Stone Gate") topographical motif of Chinese landscape painting, in which two or three closely placed rock pillars suggest a natural gateway, and the printed caption title 石門喬松 ("Tall Pines of Shimen / Stone Gate") confirms the reference. The upper-right corner carries the printed series designation 河南八勝 第八 (Henan Eight Views, no. 8) and the lower text panel contains a five-character Chinese-style poem in regular script. The seal-form signature 文清/文星 (Bunsei) is impressed at the upper left. The print closes Bunsei's Henan set on a quiet, contemplative note characteristic of the album-leaf landscape tradition and provides a self-conscious echo of the Eight Views' closing scenes (most famously "Evening Snow Blending River and Sky"), but transposed to the central Chinese geography of Henan. The complete Harvard set, with Hayashi Tadamasa's seal on most of the designs, is among the few full impressions of the series known in North American collections.
