"Autumn Colors at Nikko" depicts one of Japan's most celebrated autumn spectacles — the hillside forests surrounding the Toshogu Shrine complex at Nikko turning to brilliant reds, oranges, and golds — a destination that drew visitors specifically for autumn foliage viewing. Nikko's combination of magnificent Edo-period shrine architecture and mountain forest setting made it uniquely spectacular in autumn, when the elaborate lacquered shrine buildings are framed by the crimson maples. Okuyama's print captures the visual richness of this seasonal transformation against the grandeur of Nikko's sacred landscape.
