"Sakura Bridge from Shirauobashi" (View from Shirauobashi to Sakura Bridge) presents a Tokyo river view in the classic Japanese landscape tradition of one bridge seen from another — a compositional strategy that created depth and framing simultaneously. The whitebait bridge (Shirauobashi) and the cherry blossom bridge (Sakurabashi) were both landmarks on the Sumida River's tributary waterways, and the view from one to the other during the cherry blossom season — when the banks of the river were lined with flowering trees — was one of the great urban landscape subjects of the Tokyo print tradition.
