"Snowcapped Mt. Fuji" presents Japan's most iconic landmark in its winter aspect — the white-capped cone rising with absolute clarity above the surrounding landscape, the snow that covers Fuji from late autumn through early summer giving it its most spectacular profile. Fuji under snow was among the most reproduced subjects in all of Japanese art, from Hokusai's "Thirty-six Views" to thousands of subsequent prints, photographs, and paintings. Okuyama's personal rendering of this canonical subject asserts his individual observation against the accumulated tradition while paying homage to it.
