Description
Nude renders the human body in Hagiwara's abstracted sosaku-hanga idiom — the figure stripped of social context and cultural markers, reduced to its essential formal qualities of mass, line, and surface. Hagiwara's carved block technique, which worked through controlled removal of material, produced a figure defined by what remained after the cutting rather than by what was added through drawing. The nude in the sosaku-hanga tradition was a declaration of artistic independence from both the commercial bijin-ga tradition and academic figure painting.
