Ancester

"Ancester" (1958), a woodblock print by Hodaka Yoshida, presents an abstracted totemic figure in solid black against a mottled grey and cream ground. The form suggests a seated or squatting body with a rounded, hollow torso, curved shoulder-like projections, and a small circular void near its center, flanking sections of stippled grey-black texture set into an off-white paper field. Fine white linear marks and a few small dots accent the black shape, and the composition is symmetrical and vertically oriented.
