Description

A single abstracted, mask-like figure fills the composition, built from interlocking black, dark maroon, and grey biomorphic shapes accented with small mustard-yellow and gold circles and dots. A large round white-and-black eye sits within a curved grey form on the left, while branching, antler- or flame-like black projections extend upward and outward from the head; below, a horizontal black bar or platform-like element spans the base of the composition. The palette is limited to black, grey, maroon, and ochre against the cream tone of the paper, giving the print a dense, angular, puzzle-like mood. Woodblock print, "Crafty God," by Hodaka Yoshida, 1956.
