Caught God

"Caught God" (1956), a woodblock print by Hodaka Yoshida, presents an abstract, totem-like figure built from interlocking curved and geometric shapes in black, grey, indigo, and brown against a mottled off-white ground. A single wide eye with a dark pupil appears near the center of the composition, surrounded by hook and spiral forms, teardrop shapes, and small round accents in pale green, lavender, and cream. The print fills most of the sheet within a wide unmarked margin, with pencil inscriptions in the lower corners.
