This [oban](/glossary/oban) woodblock print depicts a figure glimpsed behind a folding screen, one of the most recognizable pieces of Japanese interior furniture. Folding screens, or byobu, serve as both room dividers and decorative surfaces, and their presence in an image immediately establishes a domestic interior setting. Igawa Sengai uses the screen as a compositional device that partially conceals the figure, creating a sense of private space interrupted by the viewer's gaze. The screen's panels divide the image into vertical sections, while the figure visible behind or beside the screen introduces a contrasting organic form. This interplay between architectural geometry and human presence gives the print its spatial interest. The woodblock medium renders the screen's flat panels and any painted decoration on their surface with particular effectiveness, since the printing technique naturally produces the flat, opaque color areas that characterize real screen paintings.
