This [oban](/glossary/oban) woodblock print sets a beautiful woman aboard a pleasure boat during a rainstorm, combining three subjects in a single dramatic composition. Pleasure boating, or funaasobi, was a refined leisure activity in Japan, often associated with moon-viewing or cherry blossom parties conducted on rivers and canals. The arrival of a sudden storm transforms the scene from leisure to peril, the rain lashing the water's surface while the woman clutches her kimono or umbrella against the wind. Igawa Sengai stages this collision of elegance and weather with the woodblock printer's full arsenal: parallel lines scored into the block to represent driving rain, grey washes for the turbulent sky, and the woman's bright kimono providing a focal point of color amid the stormy monochrome. The boat tilts or rocks on the agitated water, introducing diagonal energy into a medium that tends toward horizontal and vertical stability.
