Mirrors are among the most symbolically charged objects in Japanese culture, where the sacred mirror Yata no Kagami is one of the three imperial regalia. In this [oban](/glossary/oban) woodblock print, Igawa Sengai presents a woman looking into a mirror, creating the classic doubling effect where the viewer sees both the figure's back and her reflected face. The mirror in [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) prints serves a narrative function: the woman is engaged in grooming, applying makeup, or simply contemplating her own appearance, an intimate activity that the viewer observes without the subject's awareness. Sengai uses the mirror to reveal what the woman's pose would otherwise conceal, turning a back-facing composition into a de facto portrait. The reflected face appears within the mirror's frame as a picture within a picture, and the printer would have rendered it with slightly softer focus or altered tones to distinguish reflection from reality.
