$200–$1,500. Common landscapes: $200–$500. Key value factors: Igawa's landscape prints are affordably priced. Atmospheric scenes in good condition are most collectible.
A balcony provides the setting for this [oban](/glossary/oban) woodblock print, placing the figure in a transitional space between interior and exterior. Balconies in traditional Japanese architecture, whether the engawa veranda of a house or the railed gallery of a temple or inn, offer views outward while maintaining the privacy of an elevated position. Igawa Sengai positions the figure at this threshold, where she can observe the landscape or street below without fully entering the public world. The balcony railing creates a horizontal line that anchors the composition and separates the figure's space from whatever lies beyond and below. The oban format provides enough vertical space to show both the figure and the architectural setting, including the railing, floor, and perhaps a portion of the view. This spatial arrangement invites the viewer to share the figure's vantage point, looking both at her and with her toward the scene beyond.
