Description
Subtitled "Dokusho" (Reading), this print from the "Ten Types of Female Nudes" series shows an unclothed woman engaged with a book. Ishikawa Toraji combines two subjects, the nude figure and the act of reading, that each carried distinct associations in early Showa art. The reading nude is intellectually engaged rather than passively displayed, her attention directed inward toward the text rather than outward toward the viewer. The series "Rajo jusshu" treated the female nude as capable of expressing a full range of human activities and moods, and this entry presents the contemplative, cerebral dimension of that exploration.
