Description

Ninnaji Temple Gate in Snow — Ninnaji is a Shingon Buddhist temple in northwestern Kyoto, famous for its late-blooming Omuro cherry trees and its substantial complex of gates, pagodas, and gardens. The main gate (nandaimon) in winter snow creates one of the most visually powerful subjects in the Kyoto seasonal repertoire: the massive wooden gate, its vermilion pillars and dark tiles softened by white snow, standing at the entrance to the temple's forested precincts. Nisaburo's snow scene captures both the architectural grandeur of the gate and the hush of winter precipitation.
