Description
A nude or semi-nude figure emerges from the bath, the Japanese title 浴後 (yokogo, "after bathing") marking the subject explicitly in the tradition of bijin-ga that depict women in states of intimate undress. Shinsui's nude prints, while relatively few in his overall output, are notable for their directness—the figures are not coyly posed but observed with the same attentive respect he brought to his fully clothed beauties. The woodblock medium, with its inherent abstraction of tone and outline, lends the nude subject a dignified formality.
