This is a keyblock impression (sumi-zuri or shita-e proof) for the finished print Snow at the Shrine, showing only the black outline impression pulled from the carved cherry-wood keyblock before the color blocks were registered and printed over it. Such proofs document the foundational stage of the mokuhanga process, in which the carver ([horishi](/glossary/horishi)) translates the artist's [hanshita-e](/glossary/hanshita-e) drawing into a precise line block that defines every contour of the composition. Here the linework establishes the architecture of a shrine — torii, lanterns, or roof eaves — under snowfall, with the falling flakes likely reserved as untouched paper rather than carved into the keyblock itself. Keyblock impressions were retained by artists, publishers, and connoisseurs as records of the carver's craft and as reference for subsequent editions. For Shinsui, who is better known for [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga), snow-scene [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) of this kind reflect his quieter landscape work for Watanabe Shozaburo, and the surviving keyblock proof allows close study of the carving that underlies the finished [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e).
