Bijin and Fuji — a composition that places a beautiful woman in proximity to Japan's most iconic landscape feature. In the bijin-ga tradition, women were frequently depicted with natural settings — cherry blossoms, maple leaves, snow — that reflected or contrasted with their emotional state. Pairing a bijin with Fuji adds a note of monumentality and national pride to what is otherwise an intimate figure study, perhaps suggesting a view from the Tokaido road or from one of the coastal vantage points from which the mountain is visible.
