Description
Arayu is another of the hot spring villages within the Shiobara resort district, and this print depicts one of the narrow mountain roads connecting the spa settlements of the valley. Such roads were characteristic subjects in Hasui's Shiobara series: winding paths cut into steep hillsides, flanked by tall cryptomeria cedars whose trunks disappear into the upper frame, with glimpses of the river below or inn rooftops emerging through the foliage. The road itself — rendered as a pale, unpigmented curve — provides a strong compositional line leading the eye into the print's depth. Hasui's treatment of forest light, achieved through the interplay of green and deep shadow across many narrow color blocks, is among the most technically complex aspects of his woodland compositions. The print was likely published as part of his documented series on the Shiobara hot springs region.
