Description
This second Asakusa Kannon snow composition likely offers a different viewpoint or seasonal moment compared to its companion print—perhaps emphasizing the Nitenmon gate, the five-story pagoda, or the main hall precinct rather than the Kaminarimon approach. Hasui returned to Senso-ji repeatedly across his career, and multiple editions with revised color blocks or adjusted compositions exist within the Watanabe catalog. Snow scenes at this temple carry particular cultural resonance: the temple's long association with popular devotion made it a natural subject for prints evoking the continuity of Tokyo's traditions amid rapid modernization. The technical treatment of snow-laden temple roofs—their sweeping copper-green eaves weighted with white—required precise registration across multiple keyblock passes. The interplay of the dark structural timbers, snow, and the smoky-blue winter sky produces the subdued tonal drama characteristic of Hasui's urban nocturnes and winter prints.
