Description
This second print of the Asama Shrine subject in Shizuoka may represent a revised edition, a different season, or an alternative compositional angle compared to its companion. The Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha complex contains multiple structures—the haiden, honden, karamon, and the celebrated Wakutama-ike spring pool—each offering distinct pictorial possibilities. If this variant focuses on the mirror pond or the garden, the water's reflective surface would have allowed Hasui to double the shrine's architectural elements and the surrounding cedar canopy in wavering reflection, a compositional device he used with particular skill. Differences in lighting—morning versus evening, or the presence of seasonal snow on the cedar boughs—would account for distinct tonal palettes between the two prints. Both belong to Hasui's broader project of documenting Japan's sacred sites as landscape subjects in the shin-hanga tradition.
