Description
Baishinji Beach lies along the coast of Iyo Province, the old administrative designation for present-day Ehime Prefecture on the northwest shore of Shikoku. The Seto Inland Sea coastline provided Hasui with a distinctive marine landscape: calm, island-dotted water quite different from the open Pacific or Japan Sea subjects he treated elsewhere. This print likely depicts the beach at low tide or evening, with pine trees—the characteristic coastal vegetation of the Seto Inland Sea shore—framing the composition on one side. The calm water of the Inland Sea, rendered through horizontal bokashi gradation from pale foreground to deeper distance, reflects the light of an atmospheric sky. Hasui's visits to Shikoku are less frequent in his documented travel itinerary, making this among the relatively rarer regional subjects in his published output.
