Description

Depicting the coastal area near the Kaiganji temple in Sanuki Province (present-day Kagawa Prefecture on Shikoku island), this print places Hasui in a region he visited during sketching travels through western Japan. The Seto Inland Sea coastline here differs markedly from the Pacific coast: the sheltered waters are calmer, shallower, and suffused with a pale, luminous quality of reflected light. Hasui likely used restrained bokashi gradations to convey this distinctive maritime atmosphere, with the gentle swell of the inland sea rendered in layered blues and grey-greens. The Kaiganji, a coastal temple, may appear among pines or behind a stone wall, providing architectural weight against the open water. Fishing boats or stone lanterns could anchor the foreground, anchoring the viewer's eye before the horizon. The print belongs to Hasui's broader project of recording regional landscapes across Japan.
