Description

Titled 帆かけ舟 (hakake-bune, "sailboat"), this nocturnal composition shows a traditional sail-rigged vessel on open water after sunset. Hasui's night scenes depend heavily on the printer's ability to build deep, layered blues and blacks across washi paper, and the sky's transition from residual twilight color to darkness would require precise bokashi gradation. The white sail, left largely unpigmented against the dark ground, creates the stark tonal contrast characteristic of Hasui's most dramatic prints. This subject appears in multiple closely related states, suggesting the design was re-issued or reworked across editions. The image reflects the shin-hanga interest in transient atmospheric conditions — the specific quality of light at the boundary between day and night rather than a generic seascape.
