Description
This impression of the Byodo-in at Uji belongs to Hasui's recurrent engagement with the site across different publishing periods. Later printings of Hasui's most popular compositions by Watanabe Shozaburo or subsequent publishers sometimes show variations in color saturation and block wear compared to first-edition impressions. This version of the Uji subject likely shares the essential compositional elements common to Hasui's Phoenix Hall prints — the reflective pond, the bilateral symmetry of the hall's wings, the layered roofline — while potentially differing in palette or sky treatment. The Heian-era architecture's curved rooflines and bronze phoenix finials atop the central tower offered Hasui's woodblock carvers intricate decorative elements to render in fine-line cutting against broader color fields.
