Description
Among Hasui's several treatments of the Byodo-in, this version emphasizes the temple's setting within the wider Uji landscape rather than isolating the Phoenix Hall as a frontal architectural study. Uji was historically associated with the final chapters of The Tale of Genji and held deep literary resonance for Japanese audiences. Hasui would have been aware of this cultural weight when composing the scene. The surrounding hillsides, the Uji River's flow, and the dense tree cover typical of the Uji valley may appear in the composition's periphery, contextualizing the hall within its riverine setting. The print demonstrates the shin-hanga emphasis on atmospheric landscape, treating architecture as an element within a broader natural environment rather than as the sole subject.
