Description

Nocturnal water scenes are among the most technically demanding subjects in Hasui's oeuvre, requiring printers to achieve deep, luminous darkness without muddying the reflected moonlight. This print depicts a canal — likely one of the urban waterways of Tokyo or Osaka — under the light of a moon positioned outside the picture plane, its glow breaking across the water's surface in fragmented reflections. Hasui's nighttime prints rely on precisely registered bokashi gradations to model the graduated darkness of the sky and the differential brightness between water and embankment. Stone or earthen canal walls, lantern light from adjacent structures, and the silhouettes of moored boats or bare trees were typical compositional elements in such scenes. The stillness Hasui achieves in these nocturnal works reflects the shin-hanga movement's concern with mood and atmosphere over narrative.
