Description
Issued as a commemorative print for Children's Day (こどもの日, May 5), this design almost certainly features koinobori — the large carp-shaped cloth streamers flown on that date — against a spring sky. Hasui would have exploited the formal qualities of the koinobori: their scaled patterning, dynamic silhouettes, and saturated color contrasting with the pale blue of a late-spring sky or cherry blossom-tinged landscape below. Children's Day prints were produced for the seasonal gift market and required a balance between festive imagery and Hasui's characteristic atmospheric restraint. The oban format allowed for vertical compositions that emphasize the height and movement of suspended streamers.
