Description
The first of three prints Hasui designed for the Inuyama Children's Fair (犬山こども博) in Aichi Prefecture. Inuyama Castle, one of Japan's twelve surviving original-structure castles, perches on a bluff above the Kiso River and would serve as the compositional anchor in a regional landscape print. Hasui's characteristic approach to castle architecture — precise orthographic rendering of white walls and dark tile roofs against atmospheric sky — translates well to this landmark. The commemorative function of these prints situates them within a postwar tradition of regional promotion through the prestige medium of shin-hanga woodblock, linking Hasui's late career to national reconstruction and cultural tourism.
