Description
This print shows the precincts of Senso-ji, the ancient Buddhist temple in Asakusa, Tokyo, in the aftermath of a snowfall on a clearing day. Hasui produced several Asakusa snow compositions, and this subject — post-storm clarity — gave him the opportunity to contrast bright snow accumulation against dark temple timber and rooftiles. The Nakamise arcade approach, the Kaminarimon gate, or the main hall itself may anchor the composition. Snow rests on the pagoda's tiered roofs and temple steps while open blue or pale yellow sky signals the storm's end. The bokashi gradient sky, from pale gold at the horizon to deeper blue overhead, is technically demanding and characteristic of Hasui's most ambitious winter prints. Figures in winter dress add scale and human warmth.
