Clearing After a Snowfall, Yoshida

This primary edition of Hasui's Clearing After a Snowfall, Yoshida depicts the honmachi, or main street, of Fujiyoshida town in Yamanashi Prefecture following a winter snowfall. The composition is structured as a receding perspective view down a lane flanked by traditional wooden buildings whose tile rooftops carry thick accumulations of fresh snow. At the far end of this visual corridor, the white-summit cone of Mount Fuji rises against a pale, clearing sky. Hasui's design integrates meisho-e conventions — specific place, recognizable landmark — with the mood-driven atmospheric sensitivity of shin-hanga. The interplay of warm lamplight from storefronts against cold blue snow shadows demonstrates the movement's interest in transient effects of light.
