Description
This primary edition of Hasui's Clearing After a Snowfall, Yoshida depicts the honmachi, or main street, of Fujiyoshida town in Yamanashi Prefecture following a winter snowfall. The composition is structured as a receding perspective view down a lane flanked by traditional wooden buildings whose tile rooftops carry thick accumulations of fresh snow. At the far end of this visual corridor, the white-summit cone of Mount Fuji rises against a pale, clearing sky. Hasui's design integrates meisho-e conventions — specific place, recognizable landmark — with the mood-driven atmospheric sensitivity of shin-hanga. The interplay of warm lamplight from storefronts against cold blue snow shadows demonstrates the movement's interest in transient effects of light. The print is published by Watanabe Shozaburo and printed on absorbent hosho-type washi.
