Description
Yoshida — now Fujiyoshida in Yamanashi Prefecture — sits at the northern foot of Mount Fuji along the old pilgrimage route to the mountain's summit. Hasui produced multiple versions of a Yoshida snowfall clearing scene, each a distinct printing state of this recurring subject. This third edition likely depicts the town's main street or shrine precincts under fresh snow with Fuji visible in the background. The pilgrimage town's wooden architecture, lanterns, and torii gate accumulate snow in visually structured ways. A deep perspective along the honmachi road draws the eye toward Fuji's summit. Hasui varies the warmth of the sky across editions — from cool blue-white to amber-tinged clearing light — changing the mood of essentially the same composition. The carving of snow-covered rooftiles requires precise gradation to suggest depth and weight.
