Description
This fourth recorded state of the Yoshida snowfall clearing design reflects either a distinct early publishing run or a later reprinting with adjusted color registration. Fujiyoshida's familiar composition — the long honmachi avenue lined with wooden buildings under snow, Mount Fuji closing the far end of the perspective — was one of Hasui's most reprinted subjects, attesting to its commercial and aesthetic success. In this edition, the color temperature of the sky and shadows may differ from adjacent states, and the depth of the indigo or blue shadows cast by buildings across snow-covered ground may be more pronounced or attenuated. The baren pressure used during printing affects the density of color transitions, and skilled printers at the Watanabe workshop exercised significant judgment in this process.
