Arashiyama, the mountain district at the western edge of Kyoto along the Oi River, has been a celebrated scenic site since the Heian period, its slopes famous for cherry blossoms in spring and scarlet maples in autumn. Hasui's spring view from the Nihon fukei shu II Kansai series likely depicts the mountain flanks dense with somei yoshino cherry blossoms above the river, with the Togetsukyo bridge or the riverside path providing compositional structure. Rendering cherry blossoms in woodblock required delicate color separations: the pale pink of the flowers printed against varied green, gray, and sky backgrounds demanded precise bokashi gradation to suggest atmospheric depth without the blossoms reading as flat pattern. The Oi River's wide, shallow course allowed Hasui to incorporate horizontal water reflections as a counterweight to the massed verticality of the flower-laden slopes. As a canonical subject of Kyoto meisho-e, this print engages directly with centuries of precedent while employing shin-hanga's refined pigments and registration standards.
