A second printing state of Hasui's Kasuga Shrine deer composition, this woodblock print shares its subject with related versions while likely differing in colorway, [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) distribution, or paper tone. The scene centers on the sacred deer of Nara moving through the shrine's celebrated stone lantern avenue, the ishidoro rendered with the texture of aged granite under filtered forest light. Hasui's skill at depicting dappled shade and the particular stillness of sacred spaces is evident in this type of composition. [Shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) publishers such as Watanabe produced multiple runs of popular designs, and subtle differences in line block impressions and pigment layering distinguish individual states of the same image.
