Description

Ushibori, a small fishing settlement on the shores of Lake Kasumigaura in Ibaraki Prefecture, provided Hasui with one of his characteristic subjects: still inland water reflecting a fading sky. At dusk the lake surface becomes a near-perfect mirror, doubling the warm tones of the western horizon against dark silhouetted reeds or moored fishing boats. Hasui likely employed delicate bokashi to modulate the gradation from a saturated amber or violet sky into the grey-blue of the water below. The horizontal register of the composition — low horizon, expansive sky, flat shoreline — is typical of his Kanto plain landscapes, where openness amplifies the emotional weight of transitional light. Published by Kawaguchi & Sakai or Watanabe Shozaburo depending on the edition, this print exemplifies Hasui's ability to transform an unassuming provincial locale into a quietly monumental scene.
