Description

The first or primary print in Hasui's Tasogare sequence establishes the compositional and chromatic vocabulary of the group. Tasogare — dusk — was among Hasui's most revisited themes, and the word itself carries literary resonance in Japanese poetry and literature as a liminal moment of perceptual uncertainty. The print likely depicts a named or recognizable Japanese location at the precise moment when warm daylight has largely receded but darkness has not yet taken hold. Sky gradations rendered in bokashi technique, moving from residual amber through mauve into deep blue, would be among the most technically demanding passages for the printer. Watanabe Shozaburo's workshop, which published much of Hasui's output, was known for its exacting standards in color registration and gradation, qualities essential to capturing the nuanced chromatic transitions the dusk hour demanded.
