Night views with moonlight and lantern effects carry a 20–30% premium over comparable daytime scenes. The dramatic tonal contrasts required for nocturnal subjects make impression quality especially important — fine examples from pre-war printings show a depth of color that later editions rarely match. Prints with well-preserved black areas and accurate moonlight bokashi command the highest prices. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
Evening at Tago Bay, from the Selection of Views of Japan published in 1940, depicts Tago no ura — the famous bay on the Suruga coast near the mouth of the Fuji River that inspired some of Japan's most celebrated classical poetry — at the transitional hour of evening, the sky shifting from afternoon to the first colors of sunset over the bay's wide expanse. Tago no ura, celebrated in the Man'yoshu and Ogura Hyakunin Isshu for its views of Fuji above the sea, gave Hasui a subject with layers of classical literary association. The seascape and [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) tags indicate a composition of atmospheric breadth.
