Description
A second printing of Hasui's Tagonoura evening composition, this woodblock print shares the same subject as the related Tago no Ura views in Hasui's output: the shallow bay in Shizuoka Prefecture, the distant silhouette of Mt. Fuji, and the quiet surface of the water at the end of day. Multiple editions of popular Hasui compositions were common practice under publisher Watanabe Shôzaburô, and successive printings sometimes exhibit variation in color tonality, ink density, or marginal trim. Close examination of the sky's bokashi gradation and the handling of reflections on the water surface can help distinguish one printing from another. The composition typifies Hasui's approach to meisho-e, recasting a classical poetic site in the contemplative mood of shin-hanga landscape.
