Description
From the series Twelve Scenes of Tokyo (Tōkyō jūnidai), this print depicts the timber storage district of Kiba in the Fukagawa area of eastern Tokyo. Kiba was historically a network of canals used to transport and store logs floated down from the mountains of central Japan, and its waterways and stacked lumber defined the neighborhood's visual character. Hasui frames the scene at twilight, with the flat Kantō landscape opening the sky above while canal surfaces mirror the fading light below. Silhouetted dock structures, storage sheds, or moored timber rafts may populate the foreground, grounding the atmospheric sky in recognizable working waterfront detail. The series documents Tokyo districts that were rapidly transforming in the early Shōwa period, and the Kiba lumber yards — heavily damaged in the 1923 Kantō earthquake and rebuilt — carried both industrial and nostalgic weight for contemporary viewers. Technically, the print relies on careful bokashi gradation to render the chromatic complexity of the evening sky across the open water and timber-lined canal.
